The Compliance Officer is responsible for executing and continuously enhancing the organization’s sanctions screening and country risk management. The role ensures that all relevant counterparties, transactions, and jurisdictions are assessed in line with applicable sanctions laws. In addition, the Compliance Officer supports the organisation in maintaining and operating a robust and defensible financial crime control framework.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Sanctions Compliance
Perform daily/periodic screening of customers, prospects, suppliers, partners, and other third parties against applicable sanctions lists using screening tools.
Review, investigate, and validate potential matches
Escalate confirmed matches and support decision-making on appropriate actions
Manage stakeholder communication and reporting at all levels.
2. Export Control Compliance
Monitor and interpret applicable export control laws and regulations as part of the broader sanctions and trade compliance framework.
Translate export control requirements into clear, pragmatic, and operationally implementable frameworks, ensuring consistent application across business activities.
Perform ongoing monitoring of products, services, software, and technologies against applicable export control requirements, ensuring alignment with defined export control frameworks.
3. Country Risk Management
Support the development and maintenance of the country risk framework, including risk ratings and classification of jurisdictions.
Monitor geopolitical developments and sanctions impacting country risk profiles.
Apply country risk assessments in onboarding and partnership decisions.
Provide guidance to business teams on engagement in high-risk jurisdictions.
4. Regulatory Watch & Financial Crime Monitoring
Monitor sanctions regimes and regulatory developments from key authorities (EU, UN, UK, US, and others as relevant).
Support monitoring of wider financial crime regulations ((AML, sanctions, export controls).
Translate regulatory changes into actionable internal updates (policies, controls, screening logic).
Support ongoing updates of sanctions policies, procedures, and control frameworks.
5. AML / Financial Crime
Support the AML/Financial Crime team in maintaining and operating a robust and defensible financial crime control framework.
Integration of sanctions indicators into broader AML / Financial Crime control framework;
Collaborate with other stakeholders to ensure that screening outcomes are reflected in customer, supplier, partner, and other third-party due diligence processes.
Support investigation and case documentation for escalated financial crime matters by ensuring clear audit trails, rationale for decisions, evidence of screening results, and appropriate follow-up actions.
Contribute to continuous improvement of financial crime-related policies, procedures, controls, and escalation criteria, with a specific focus on ensuring that sanctions and country risk controls are aligned with broader AML/CFT expectations.
6. Stakeholder Management & Advisory
Act as a key contact point for sanctions-related queries from business, Legal, and Compliance teams.
Provide practical guidance on sanctions risks in commercial decisions (e.g., onboarding, contracting).
Support training and awareness sessions on sanctions and country risk.
Strongly interfaces with:
o AML / Financial Crime
o Business Ethics & Third-Party Risk
o Legal
o Operations
o IT (screening tools & data governance)
Collaborate with and support compliance, internal control, audit, and regulatory teams where required.
KNOWLEDGE, TECHNICAL SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in Law, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or a related field;
Proven experience in sanctions screening, financial crime compliance, AML/CFT, or trade/export control compliance, preferably within an international organisation;
Solid understanding of sanctions regimes (EU, UN, UK, US), export control frameworks, and broader financial crime regulations;
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills; fluent in English (oral and written); knowledge of additional languages is considered a plus;
Strong analytical and investigative skills, with attention to detail in reviewing alerts, conducting assessments, and documenting outcomes;
Ability to manage high volumes of operational work (e.g. screening alerts) while maintaining quality, consistency, and auditability;
Experience working with sanctions screening tools and data platforms is an asset;
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple activities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment;
Experience working in an international and cross-border environment, preferably in the services industry;
Proactive, hands-on, and solution-oriented mindset, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability;
Ability to bridge legal/regulatory requirements and business operations, ensuring practical and scalable implementation;
Willingness to continuously monitor regulatory developments and adapt approaches accordingly;
Open to occasional travel within Europe, if required.
